Two new editions from the DRC Newsletter online
The Mobility Newsletter, a regular bulletin to share information and raise awareness in DRC Congo, has published two issues. In the context of DRC's rehabilitation and reconstruction the National Forum Group has aimed to reflect and synergise on the dynamics around mobility and accessiblity for the rural poor. The bulletin assesses this from the NFG level, the bi- and multilateral level, civil society and central transport services and infrastructure. In general, it emerges that the approach adopted by the aid agencies and cooperation has not yet put mobility and accessibility at the centre of their actions and field programmes.
Focusing on the links between transport, the environment and social issues (based on a the synthesis of an impact study of PRO-ROUTE, the first government-initiated road programme), Mobility number 11 presents a new sustainable approach adopted by FAO to help them in their fight against malnourishment and food insecutiry by rehabilitating the roads that provide access to markets.
Issue number 12 focuses on mult-modal means of transport for the rehabilitation of the country, emphasising the transport costs in the interior which is currently dominated by air transport having a bad safety record. The multi-modality gives priority to road and water transport. It also highlights the experience of CLER in the Bas Congo (Project CTB/Rural Roads) which can serve as a training school for road maintenance.
