Workshop on Rural Roads, Transportation and Travel

photo Taking place in Rome, Italy, 24th - 25th June, 2008, the workshop is co-organised by IFAD, ILO and IFRTD. Through networking and information-sharing the workshop aims to enhance pro-poor performance in RTT to help achieve the MDGs. A key principle of the workshop is to focus all presentations and discussions on hands-on proven experiences, best practices and lessons on RTT investments.

Background:
Efficient RTT facilitates access to basic socio-economic goods and services, information, technologies, agricultural development and markets, which contribute to poverty reduction. High potential farming areas cannot be developed without adequate access infrastructure and services. Poor rural / feeder and village access roads, lack of regular and/or reliable transport services and access to appropriate intermediate means of transports (IMTs) severely impede access of smallholders to markets (and vice versa).

The current policy environment in developing countries and the adoption of coherent development frameworks like the poverty reduction strategy papers (PRSPs), Paris Declaration and economic growth strategies often present opportunities to promote increased investments in RTT and the use of local resources for infrastructure delivery and employment creation.
